With the great flow of tourists this summer season, many tourist ships break the rules exceeding the maximum capacity of passengers on board allowed and thus putting their lives at risk.
For some days, however, the music has changed with the authorities in charge that, in addition to controlling the number of passengers of the ships, have triggered administrative sanctions: in cases of exceeded capacity, the first to be sanctioned is the captain of the ship with fines up to 2000 euro.
In Vlora, where there is the largest number of tourist ships, a working group was set up to control the ships. According to the Valona Maritime Directorate, all passengers were checked and some tourist ships were not allowed to take passengers beyond the capacity permitted by the Albanian maritime registry.
All passengers over the maximum capacity, who had chosen for the weekend the island of Sazan and the peninsula of Karaburun, were embarked on other ships with sufficient capacity.
In many tourist ships the number of passengers on board this weekend even went to 1300 people; for this reason, the working group will check the vehicles before their departure and will be free to carry out checks even in the open sea. In addition, small vehicles will also be monitored from around 10-12 people, who in this summer season have experienced a boom along the Valona coast (+ 25%).
The island of Sazan, from a naval base to a new tourist destination
Sazan is half an hour by ferry from Vlora, the port that welcomes tourists is on the eastern side. The surface of the island is of 5.7 square kilometers that develop at the entrance to the Gulf of Vlora.
Its length is 4.8 kilometers while it reaches a maximum width of 2 kilometers. The coast of the island is a bit jagged. On the western side there is the Gulf of Xhehenemi, a small but deep inlet. On the east coast, on the other hand, the Gulf of Shenkoll is formed where the naval-military port of the island was also built, with the Gulf of 'Japrak' in the south.
Right here is also the beach 'Admiral'. The island is made up of two rocky hills that reach a maximum height of 342 meters. Raising this relief directly from the sea creates the impression of a much larger height. The island's altitude gradually decreases as you go towards the center. Its two valleys, that of Xhehenem and Shenkoll, divide the island into two parts: the northern one, which is the highest with 342 meters, and the southern one with 331 meters.
The outskirts of the island has beautiful beaches that until now have not been used. And in fact, taking a look at the coasts of this island, the beauty of the beaches, caves and, more generally, of its history, amazes you.
From the 2010, the islet is part, together with the Karaburun peninsula, of the Karaburun-Sazan National Park, reachable on board one of the many boats that leave from the port of Valona. Here you can admire the wonderful Haxhi Aliu cave, considered the largest and most profound of all Albania.
