The cave of Pëllumbas is located 25 km from Tirana, on the national road Tirana-Elbasan. This is said to be one of the first settlements in the area of Tirana, belonging to the Paleolithic, about 30.000-50.000 years ago.
It was discovered in 1995 when scholars went to the site to closely assess the condition of the cave, and then included it in the list of natural monuments of Albania. But its importance is even greater: the cave, in fact, is one of six of this type scattered throughout Europe, and has preserved its old age and its naturalness since no one has been able to break it and build something.
How to get to Pëllumbas
From Tirana, just follow the Tirana-Elbasan road and turn left where the sign indicates 'Teatro Kame' and 'Pëllumbas', before arriving in the tunnel. The road to Pëllumbas is in good condition up to the center of the village, which has recently been restored and turned into a modern tourist information center.
There you can find all the necessary maps, buy souvenirs, or even a torch that will be useful when exploring the cave. Shoes are indispensable. Start the journey from the village to a very narrow mountain path.
The path is well signposted and there are benches in special places where you can rest for a while. It takes 40-60 minutes to reach the cave, but the surrounding nature is worth the price of the effort. Under the mountain it is possible to observe the Erzen river that runs along its path creating beautiful shapes around the valley between the mountains.
It's all green and surprising. The road to the cave, however, is very dangerous, so caution is needed during the journey. Once you reach the cave, it is impossible not to be surprised by its size.
The temperature inside is a refrigerator and can be visited only through an expert guide. The entire cave has a length of 360 meters and a width of 10-15 meters, traversable in 15-30 minutes. At the end of it there is the highest and widest part, in the shape of a dome and of almost 45 meters.
