After three months of blockade, Albania's airspace will be reopened on Monday, June 22nd.
The Ministry of Infrastructure has announced that starting from June 22, all airlines will have the opportunity to fly from Mother Teresa airport to abroad, but on one condition: the flight companies will have to obtain a permit in their respective countries in they wish to fly, or a confirmation from the country of destination if they can travel or not. However Albania opens to foreign citizens who want to reach the country, but if foreign states do not agree, the flight will not take place.
So if a company wants to fly to Italy, it must obtain a permit from the Italian authorities to operate the flight. So there will be no agreement between the states but it is up to the companies to guarantee the permission to then book the flights.
"As of June 22, 2020, according to the schedule, airlines must take the necessary measures to allow the booking of flights to and from Tirana international airport ", Reads a communication from the Ministry of Infrastructure.
In addition, flight operators operating from Tirana International Airport will be responsible for informing passengers of the possible restrictions in force at the airports of the intended destination, as well as the health safety rules at the destination airport. The whole process will be strictly monitored by the Albanian Civil Aviation.
During flights, airlines must also strictly adhere to health protocols. The Ministry's decision is based on the statements of the European Commission of 11 June 2020 which recommended the opening of travel to Albania and other countries.
"Considering the declaration of the European Commission of 11 June 2020, according to which it is recommended, inter alia, the lifting of travel restrictions for Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, northern Macedonia and Serbia, starting from 1 July 2020, and the commitments of several other Schengen countries to follow the same approach, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy announces that regular international flights to scheduled destinations will start from June 22, 2020, which must be approved and communicated by the 'Civil Aviation Authority. "
However, the message is not yet clear why flights do not depend only on Albania but on foreign states. A situation similar to the land borders is created: Albania had decided to open the borders and the neighbors had closed.
