In Albania, internet traffic from mobile networks increased at a high rate in the last quarter of last year. Statistics of the Authority for Electronic and Postal Communications (AKEP) show a 26% increase in traffic compared to the same period of 2018.
On average, each user already consumes almost 3,5 gigabyte Internet every month with their own phone. Average consumption is even higher, with 27% more on an annual basis.
According to AKEP, there are almost 1, 8 million Albanians who have access to cell phones 3G e 4G. The number of users has increased by about 3% compared to a year ago.
The global trend of relocating mobile services on the Internet is increasingly a reality also in Albania. Call and text message traffic also declined last year, offset by increased data usage.
The Internet service has received a strong boost from 4G technology and the growing penetration of smartphones that support this type of technology.
The first steps towards 5G technology
This year, AKEP is expected to take the first steps towards providing frequencies for the 5G generation. AKEP has formally requested the Ministry of Infrastructure to release the spectrum to be used for the generation of 5G mobile services. The first frequencies to be used for this purpose are those of 700 Mhz band.
The rapid development of broadband Internet-based services by mobile networks is increasing the need for higher transmission capacities. Furthermore, in Albania mobile networks are an important alternative, due to the still low penetration of fixed lines, in particular outside the large urban centers.
