At a time when emigration has become a major problem for Albania, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged the country to find measures to reduce the immigration rate.
Indeed, the latest IMF report - which also warned the Albanian government about the risks of public / private partnership - states that to achieve this goal it is as important as necessary to improve the business climate (through a series of reforms), to strengthen the struggle corruption and improving public services.
Furthermore, the authorities should quickly complete the judicial reform, applying anti-corruption maneuvers. Another concern - according to the report - is aroused by the widespread informality in the country's economy.
For this reason, it is suggested to implement a tax system in order to increase tax collection but it is also necessary for the government to increase the quality of public services. In this regard, one of the priorities must be to be able to make a career through potential and free competition.
Emigration, the INSTAT data
According to official data from the Albanian Statistics Institute (INSTAT), around 1,5 million Albanians live outside the national borders of the Land of Eagles.
The main reasons for this new migration trend are four, listed by the national statistical institute: the possibility of being able to work abroad (84%), family reunification (4,6%), unemployment in Albania (4,2%), the possibility to study abroad (3,5%) and other factors (3,6%).
Most Albanian emigrants live and work in Greece and Italy, although in recent years there has been a growing trend towards other European Union countries (such as France and Germany) and the American continent (United States and Canada).
This new migratory wave has already had its first negative effects on some of the main industries of the country: the apparel and footwear industries, as well as call centers are, in fact, facing different problems in replacing young people leaving the country .
