The Albanian government has approved a document with detailed information on migration to Albania.
The document was prepared by the Ministry of the Interior for the period 2015-2018, but contains analyzes of the current situation and predictions for the future.
According to the data, 1 584 137 Albanians live and work outside Albanian territory, of which 828 530 are males and 755 607 females. Most Albanian emigrants have settled in neighboring countries such as Italy (455 468) and Greece (429 428). +
While the Albanian population at 1 January 2019 was 2.862.427 inhabitants, down 0,3% compared to 1 January 2018. The Albanian population in 2031, according to updated projections, is estimated at 2 745 996 inhabitants, or 116 731 fewer inhabitants.
“Migration movements continue to influence population decline and aging. This is also demonstrated from the period 2015-2018, with a population decrease of around 14.000 units, while, in the last four years, the rate of population decline has been -0,2% per year ", states the document.
Also according to the document, the main reason for leaving Albania is "job opportunities" 84,0% and only 4,2% want to emigrate because they are completely unemployed.
The number of Albanian emigrants in 2018 is around 38 700 units, while the number of immigrants who entered Albania reaches 23 700. International migration continues to be an important factor in the country's demographic developments.
The predominance of expats over new arrivals has an immediate impact on the population. Furthermore, the migration of women of working and reproductive age affects the most important demographic indicators, such as the drop in fertility. In 2018, in the Albanian population, young people (0-14 years) represented 17,5% of the population, the working age population (15-64 years) about two thirds (68,7%) of the population, while the population over the age of 65 accounted for about 14% of the country's population.
Foreigners in Albania: how many they are and where they live
On 1 January 2019, there are 14162 foreign citizens residing in Albania, which belong to the following categories: regular economic immigrants, students, asylum seekers; naturalized foreigners, immigrants for other reasons. Furthermore, in the period 2015-2019, 1.300 citizens have submitted applications to the Ministry of Interior to obtain Albanian citizenship. Tirana has the largest number of foreigners working, followed by the districts of Durres e Fier.
Foreigners work mainly as employees and a small part as self-employed and / or as investors. Foreign citizens have entered the domestic job market in those sectors where employers are unable to find workforce in the country. The main sectors are information and communication technologies, the mining industry, the retail or wholesale trade, construction activities and other services.
The countries of origin of foreign workers are non-EU states such as China, Canada and northern Macedonia, but also EU member states such as Italy, Greece and France. Some come from Kosovo and the United States of America.
