According to a survey conducted by the European Commission, Albanian citizens work more than anyone else in Europe: in fact, the European average is 40 working hours per week while in Albania the average working hours per week amount to 48.
Immediately behind Albania, in this special ranking, there are Serbia and Turkey, where citizens work on average 47 hours a week.
In the more developed European countries, on the other hand, such as the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom, the weekly working hour average drops to 40 hours. In total, according to the data published by theInstitute of Albanian Statistics (Instat), an Albanian citizen works on average 409 hours per year, more than any other developed country in Europe.
Second Kol Nikollaj, president of the confederation of Albanian trade unions, there is a link between productivity, working hours and wages:
"In Albania more work is being done than in other countries in Europe, but work productivity is lower than in other countries and wages are also significantly lower than in other countries; now it's a vicious circle.
If you do not increase the salaries of the workers you will not stimulate them to work more for their training and their qualification and, consequently, the productivity will be low. And why is productivity low? Because wages are also low, and entrepreneurs do not have the opportunity to increase them because productivity does not allow it " - said Kol Nikollaj.
Furthermore, according to Nikollaj, the state bodies that should monitor and supervise the labor market, such as the labor inspectorate, do not perform their duties while still not having a law on the activity of trade unions:
"Some are called company unions, other trade unions of the professions while others are trade unions at national level; we therefore have a chaotic situation. We have no law on collective bargaining, which is essential for solving problems such as working hours, salaries, productivity and quality of work and quality of life " - underlined Nikollaj.
