Finding qualified personnel with the right skills is becoming an increasingly big problem for employers in Albania, as the country has faced a new wave of migration over the past five years and the population is gradually decreasing and aging.
A survey of the 2017,, which involved more than 2500 companies, highlighted how the lack of qualifications and the poor work culture are the most recurrent concerns for entrepreneurs in the country.
The situation is linked to the huge wave of asylum requests and the brain drain that Albania has had to face in recent years; more than 146.000 citizens - about 5% of the total population - have sought international protection in countries that have already been EU members in the last five years with a peak of 66.000 requests in the 2015, as reported by the EU statistical office, Eurostat .
Lack of qualified personnel: the thought of experts
Experts say that the increase in the number of enrollments in vocational training schools is one of the main reasons for the difficulty in finding qualified personnel. The UN, on the other hand, maintains through a study that the main causes are the poor work culture and the educational system that does not meet the needs of the country's economy.
The skills shortage is another major concern for employers, with about 40% of them claiming that their staff lacks certain skills, a value doubled compared to the previous 2014 dated survey. The main cause of all this would seem to be the labor market which is not able to offer staff sufficient skills and abilities, in addition obviously to the lack of experienced personnel. Among the professions that fall into this context are the sellers in the shops, the mechanics and the waiters.
Companies argue that on-the-job training provided by experienced company personnel is a key means of properly training new staff. However, the lack of funds is considered the main obstacle to the training of personnel, which therefore does not take place. For this reason, currently, the replacement of personnel is the main solution adopted by Albanian companies to face the lack of qualified personnel.
