The revenues of the main television stations in Albania last year increased by 7%, led by TV Klan. The most important TV broadcasters have increased their market share compared to the previous year, marking a worsening of the market concentration index.
The main TV broadcasters in Albania have generated total revenues for 2018 billion lek in 4,2, with an increase of 7% compared to 2017, according to the financial statements that the companies published in the Qendra Kombëtare and Biznesit, Albanian National Business Center (similar to the Italian Chamber of Commerce, ndt)
The market concentration index fell to 84%, from 82% which was a year earlier.
BIRN (Balkan Investigative Reporting Network) has analyzed the balance sheets of the nine leading media companies operating in the pay-TV market in Albania, so as to see their revenues and earnings, the general trend of the financial performance of the market and the indicators of income concentration as an indirect measure of the plurality of information.
The 2018 year was the first in three years that the TV market grew, but last year's growth was not uniform. TV Klan has increased its revenue of 26%, becoming the largest broadcaster in the country in relation to revenues, a position that in recent years had always been covered by Top Channel.
For its part, Top Channel recorded a minimum increase in revenue, estimated at 0,5%, while, among the other TV broadcasters, ABC News recorded a decrease in 30%, and Scan TV recorded an increase in 27%.
The concentration index, understood as the weight of the four largest issuers on the market, has further deformed. The four TV channels Klan, Top Channel, Media Vision and Focus Media together hold the 84,6% of the market, while in the 2017 the first four, Top Channel, TV Klan, Media Vision and Ora News, together reached 82%.
The market concentration index is an international indicator that aims to measure the diversity of information resources of the citizens of a country. Concentration is considered high or too high if the four main owners of Media control more than half of it.
In the case of Albania, only the country's two main broadcasters, TV Klan and Top Channel, control the 67% of the market together, while the others share the rest of the market. The concentration of revenue in the hands of two major broadcasters has gone from the 64 of the 2017 to the 67% of now.
The media market in Albania focuses not only on financial revenues but also on ownership of basic infrastructure, which has also raised the concerns of the Albanian Competition Authority.
The biggest change in the media market over the last year is that TV Klan surpassed Top Channel for the first time as the largest company in the country. Its revenues, of 1,46 billion lek, were slightly higher than those of Top Channel, which recorded 1,37 billion, but proportionately increased by 26% on an annual basis.
TV Klan is currently owned by the Frangaj family, with a stake in Aleksandër Frangaj's 60% and Alba Gina's 40%.
Frangaj and Gina were previously shareholders of ABC News, a broadcaster that in the last few years held the 2,9% of the market, but which saw a sharp decline in 30% revenue.
According to data published by Qendra Kombëtare and Biznesit, ABC News was sold for 600 thousand euro to ABC MANAGEMENT, a new company registered in Albania of which the owner is the Greek town Efthymia Gkouma.
