Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg told the New York Times that Macedonia was involved in the dissemination of fake news.
The CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, published a letter in the British newspapers of 25 March, to apologize for having "betrayed the trust" of the users of his social network, in relation to the Cambridge Analytica affair, the political consultancy company that has managed to get the hands on 50 data millions of users.
The 34enne founder of Facebook writes that "we have a responsibility to protect your information. If we don't succeed, we don't deserve it. " Zuckerberg stated:
"We implemented some new artificial intelligence tools to identify fake and fake news accounts, and in this way we found a significant number of Macedonian accounts that were trying to spread false news. Facebook can delete such accounts. "
The content of fake news
The founder of the largest social network in the world did not elaborate on the content of the false news of these Macedonian accounts, but stated that they concerned the attempt to distort the result of the Senate race in the state of Alabama.
The December 12 elections in the southern state of the United States saw tight competition between Democrat Doug Jones and Republican Roy Moore.
In the end, Jones triumphed, becoming the first Democrat to win a Senate race in the United States from 25 years ago.
This head-to-head had attracted the attention of the world media also because of the large amount of false news that they did to the electoral campaign, many of which focused on the false accusation of electoral fraud concerning black voters, who normally vote for the Democrats in the US.
Other fake news, on the other hand, concerned some women who had accused Moore of harassment and assault when he was a county attorney over the years '70 and' 80; fact that obviously the person concerned denied.
It is not the first time that Macedonia is in the spotlight due to fake news spread on social media: in the 2016, in fact, the city of Veles had become famous for lucrative online initiatives of some of its young inhabitants, who have used the US presidential election to earn money by promoting false or misleading news in support of Donald Trump.
