The AIA Special Tribunal in Kosovo has asked for war crimes and crimes against humanity to be brought to trial for the Kosovar President, Hashim Thaçi, and the leader of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), Kadri Veseli.
Together with other people related to them, Thaçi and Veseli are accused of killing over 100 people, Kosovar ethnic Albanian, Serbian, Roma and others, during the war years in Kosovo and in the following months.
"The prosecution alleges that Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli and other suspects are criminally responsible for around 100 illegal killings. The crimes highlighted in the indictment include a hundred victims, of Albanian, Serbian and Roma ethnicity, including political opponents.
The act represents a criminal charge resulting from a lengthy investigation which shows that the Special War Crimes Tribunal can prove all charges beyond reasonable doubt. A judge in the preliminary procedure is examining the case to decide whether to confirm the allegations."- reads the press release published by Kosovo Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor's Office (KSC & SPO).
In the indictment, moreover, the AIA Court claims that Hashim Thaçi and Kadri Veseli have repeatedly attempted to obstruct and sabotage the work of KSC & SPO.
"Hashim Thaçi and Kadri Veseli are believed to have secretly embarked on a campaign to repeal the law that established the Court and that they hindered its work by challenging justice. Through these actions, Thaçi and Veseli have placed their interests above the victims of their crimes and the rule of law of the people of Kosovo."- continues the press release.
President Hashim Thaçi, together with Kadri Veseli and former Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, had attempted to repeal the law concerning the Court in 2017 through the parliamentary assembly; their action was openly opposed by the Democratic League of Kosovo and the Vetëvendosje party, both part of the opposition at the time.
Following the international pressure triggered by this initiative and the threat of remaining isolated from the United States, the three of them retraced their steps. Some time later, Ramush Haradinaj declared that the initiative to repeal the law on the court had started out for fear of being subject to it.
Due to the indictment requested by the AIA Special Court, Hashim Thaçi canceled his official visit to the United States scheduled for June 27 in Washington.
