The two most important banks, ProCredit Bank and Raffeisen Bank, have a credit monopoly and have colonized everything.
There is no institutional, cultural or sporting event that is not sponsored by one of the two banks. Agendas, pens, calendars, banners, illuminated signs, posters, anywhere ProCredit Bank or Raffeisen Bank. I had been thinking about it for days and I could not explain the reason for the presence of so many banks in a country whose micro and macroeconomic data are nothing short of disastrous. The ideas became clearer only after setting foot in the two main banks and talking to the staff. "Hi, I wish I could access your mortgage," I began this way. As a machine, the consultants of the two banks have described to me in detail every condition and characteristic of the loan, the same that you can find here, on the website of Raiffeisen and ProCredit .
There are a variety of loans. They range from lending for business and small businesses to studying, from buying the machine to financing agricultural activities. There is also one for the holidays. For each of these loans the conditions obviously change.
However, to access a loan you must have been resident in Kosovo for over six months, have a bank account at the bank and a contract of employment with a salary no less than 180 euros. If the bank is satisfied, the money will be received soon. A few days are enough: in this they are efficient. I receive a lot of information and brochures, but the doubts remain.
Everything clears when I ask for explanations about interest rates. It seems strange, but there is no precise rate and everything is very indicative - this applies to both banks. Everything depends on the guarantees you offer, the type of work (salary) you have, and above all who you are. Rates range from 10,9% per annum (yes, almost eleven percent) to over 20% (twenty, you read that right) if you offer fewer guarantees or are mere mortals. Jump from the chair.
Having heard those numbers, I must have made a sharp move. ProCredit's financial manager tries to reassure me and invites me to make an appointment with the manager because, he says, "it is he who really decides the percentage". I remain petrified for a while, but then my face takes on color. Now that my questions had been solved, I could also take my leave. And so it was.
