Prime Minister Edi Rama held a press conference this afternoon following the summit of EU leaders in which he did not give the go-ahead for the opening of accession negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia.
The Albanian premier said that the path of the Land of Eagles will continue to be directed towards the European perspective and that the reforms will continue for the citizens. The no to the opening of the negotiations with the two countries has arrived, according to Rama, because of the internal problems of the EU, which has the need to re-establish itself and to change the rules for the integration process.
Rama: European Albania is the only alternative
Despite the negative verdict, the prime minister said that European Albania is the only alternative defining it as the great duty of the country towards future generations:
"What remains is to continue because there are no other alternatives. The only one is European Albania, a duty towards the next generations.
We have made all possible efforts to achieve what we deserve, nothing more, only what we deserved. And this has so far been said not only by the European Commission, but also by a good number of EU prime ministers and also the German chancellor.
We have fulfilled our duties. From France there has never been any opening, because it requires first an internal reform of the EU and a transformation of the integration process. [...] We received a no for the opening of negotiations, nothing more; our road will be the same without any change, we have done and will continue to make reforms for our country."- declared Rama.
