The new 10.000 lek banknote, the highest value denomination issued by the Bank of Albania to date, will be released from the last quarter of 2020.
Last year, the Bank of Albania had submitted the new banknote series consisting of six denominations: 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and for the first time the 10.000 lek one.
The new 200 and 5000 lek banknotes were introduced from 30 September 2019, while at the end of 2020 it will be up to the 1000 and 10.000 lek banknotes. In 2021, on the other hand, it will be up to the new 2000 lek banknotes and then to end in 2022 with the circulation of the new 500 lek banknotes.
The novelties of the new series
The new 10.000 lek denomination has not yet been presented to the public but, as was anticipated last year by the Governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, during the presentation ceremony of the new banknote series, its design was already chosen and will be dedicated to the Albanian national anthem and the well-known Albanian poet Asdreni.
In accordance to reported Furthermore, the new series features an improvement in security features from the Bank of Albania which has made it possible to produce sophisticated banknotes that are very difficult to counterfeit, and for the first time it will have a polymer - plastic banknote that represents an innovation in the banknote production industry as it is more resistant than paper - the 200 lek one.
The current banknote series, which will be gradually replaced in the coming years, was put into circulation in 1996, with the exception of the 2000 lek denomination first introduced in 2008. In 2011, a further modification was made to the series. with the “transformation” from banknote to coin of the 100 lek denomination.
The Bank of Albania will notify the public in due course of the expiry dates of the legal tender of the old series of banknotes, which however will continue to retain their value even after expiry and can be exchanged for new ones for the same value.
