Numerous police forces intervened at the National Theater in the early hours of the morning to clear the building of activists and members of the group of artists who resisted with the intention of stopping the demolition. Tension, shoving and clashes occurred between the group of artists and the police.
In the end, more than 20 opposition activists, artists and political representatives were arrested and accompanied to the police headquarters.
The National Theater was torn down in the early hours of today. At around 04:30, excavators and other vehicles of the Inspectorate for the Protection of the Territory began the demolition of both buildings, the Experimental Theater and the National Theater, which were in the same complex. The group of artists from the National Theater together with some politicians were escorted to the police station, while several police forces patrolled the place.
The Institute for the Protection of the Territory and the municipal police continue with the demolition of the National Theater building, a process that began at 04:30 this morning. After being emptied of wardrobes and props, the excavators continue to demolish the rest of the theater. Initially, the entrance to the National Theater and the Experimental Theater fell, and then continued with the rest.
Some of the group of artists who resisted were escorted to the police stations. Among them are Robert Budina, Neritan Liçaj and others. Numerous police forces are on the scene, but also many citizens. Those arrested were accompanied to the police stations of the capital.
The opposition reacted vigorously after the demolition of the National Theater. Opposition leader Lulzim Basha went to the pedestrian area where the ruins of the National Theater are already located, and said that the Democratic Party and its allies will make political decisions.
“The opposition will meet today and take political measures. What every Albanian understands today from this event is that with Edi Rama, illegality, violence and disloyalty will continue. Violence, illegality and injustice will not end without the end of this government and without having turned away from this man (Rama ed). There is no other way.
