More than 14.000 are foreign citizens who have chosen to live and work in Albania, according to data from the National Statistical Institute (INSTAT).
To be precise, the number of foreigners residing in Albania in the 2018 amounted to 14.162, up 9,7% compared to 2017.
Foreign citizens residing in Albania
During the 2018, foreign citizens residing in Albania were respectively 9.203 males (65% of the total) and 4.959 females (35% of the total).
The number of applications for residence permits in Albania amounted to 9.090 in the 2018, increasing by 0,7% compared to the previous year. The largest number of applications came from citizens from Iran (2.223 in total), Italy (1.709 in total) and Kosovo (996 in total), or 63,8% of total requests.
Specifically, the number of applications for residence permits by Iranian citizens showed an increase of 13% compared to 2017. Reverse trend, instead, for Italian citizens with a decrease of 4% compared to 2017.
Foreigners in Albania by continents
Foreign citizens residing in Albania - if we take their continent of origin into consideration - are guided by European ones, 8.212 in total and by registering a growth of 7,5% compared to 2017.
Followed by citizens from Asia (4.022 in total, up 11,2% compared to 2017) and those from America, Africa and Oceania, which combined in 2018 amounted to 1.928 (down 16,8% compared to 2017).
The number of irregular foreign citizens (not provided with the necessary documentation) in Albania or at the Albanian border points has seen a dizzying growth last year. In fact, 1049 citizens of the 2017 have moved from 6.893 citizens to the 2018.
The largest number of irregular migrants in Albania is represented by Syrian citizens (3089 in total), followed by Pakistanis (1246 in total), Iraqis (671 in total), Palestinians (395 in total), Algerians (378 in total), Moroccans ( 330 in total) and 770 citizens from other countries.
Asylum seekers in Albania
The number of asylum requests in Albania in the 2018 - according to data from the Citizenship and Asylum Directorate at the Interior Minister - amounted to 4386, compared to the 309 of the 2017 alone.
The nationality ranking reflects that of irregular foreigners: in fact, Syrian citizens (2150 in total) are led by Albania, followed by Pakistanis, Iraqis, Palestinians, Algerians and Moroccans.
