The Albanian authorities are monitoring all web pages such as "Booking" or "Airbnb" that offer accommodation services (both hotels and homes), to carry out the necessary fiscal checks and to monitor the prices offered.
The biggest problem lies in the apartments as only on "Booking" and "Airbnb" in Albania are more of 1800 with rental offers. The tax administration claims that this type of activity must be registered with the national business center (QKB) as it is a real economic activity.
The problem of hotels
On the other hand, even the failure to declare the exact number of rooms regarding the hotels has ended up under the investigation lens of the tax authorities.
In Shkodër two tax inspectors from the municipality of the city were stopped by the police for passive corruption, since receiving bribes and falsifying the official documentation would have favored a hotel on the beach of Velipojë hiding the real number of hotel rooms. A criminal investigation was also opened against the owner of the latter.
It is precisely the failure to declare the exact number of rooms but also entire hotels that the investigations of the tax authorities have concentrated on. In the district of Durres, for example - according to the checks carried out by the television broadcaster- are registered at the QKB 77 hotel, while on Booking the number of hotels even goes up to 177.
In the Albanian hotel sector, in fact, the authorized housing units are far inferior - as it had already reported two weeks ago, Prime Minister Edi Rama - compared to informal units, which offer much lower prices due to the lack of a rate in the price.
In fact, apartment owners would be required to pay an 15% rate in the case of rent to foreign or local tourists, but this tax is very often ignored outside the capital Tirana.
Sites such as "Booking" or "Airbnb", upon registration, immediately warn users that they are only "booking intermediaries" and that business transactions take place between the owner and the customer, also remembering that the owners must refer to the local taxes of their countries.
