We publish in full the speech with which the leader of the PS and future prime minister, Edi Rama, welcomed the news of the victory against the PD of Berisha.
There are few other responsibilities for a man who are greater than the responsibility to lead the country. Today, the people of Albania have decided to entrust me and my team with the task of leading our national Renaissance, together with our strategic LSI allies. We accept responsibility with a deep sense of humility towards each of you. And from every day, from now on, until this great responsibility is ours, we will be with you and for you. I know that, as the great Abraham Lincoln said, no government in the world can satisfy all people all the time. But for all the time to come, I will never forget that you were all of you, both inside and outside Albania, who put us in charge of the country.
You believed in it because we knew how to bring out the best in ourselves to get here. A project and a new program to revive Albania. A team willing to work for rebirth. A new alliance for European Albania, which has shown the world that we are capable of putting national interest above our interests and that of the parties.
I love this country, and that's why I fought so hard to win. In my heart I know that there are endless possibilities for it to be reborn. It is our duty to bring out these possibilities from the depths of the soul and mind of every Albanian, to do our best with the opportunity we have been given to guide the country. We will govern. But neither I nor the other elected can bring the Renaissance we have promised ourselves. This is why we want you, the people of this country, to start being part of our Renaissance team.
To share aspirations, challenges and efforts to restore the economy through freedom and taxation of fair competition;
A new society where education and health are given second necessity, and not according to wealth.
A democracy based on the coexistence between us as Albanians, regardless of our geographical or ideological affiliation.
All this without ever forgetting that it was you, the sovereign people, who dyed the entire map of Albania with purple, from Scutari to Vlora, which you gave us the opportunity to try, with gestures and behavior, that we can look beyond the problems that have divided us until yesterday. We begin to work together to show us and the world that we have the talent, the values and the determination to be at the height of our fathers' wills, and of the debt we have to all the children of Albania.
Never forgetting that it must be freedom, and not its lack, the way to govern this country;
The merit, and not its lack, is the basis for evaluating each person and company in this country;
Respect for legal and ethical rules, not their absence, the way to reach a decision on this country.
We continue together, as a country and as a nation, to find the place that belongs to us in the great European family, today when, as never before, the Albanians of Albania and Kosovo not only deserve, but have in their hands the possibility of realizing the dream of complete union under that family. It has been, in some ways, a long dream. Now together we must make it come true. Never forgetting that it must be inclusion, not exclusion, dialogue and not monologue, the spirit of compromise and not complacency that can re-launch Albania as a worthy member of the European family.
There is no doubt that seeing the flags of victory waving tonight from Kukes to Gjirokastra, listening to the applause of our supporters all over the country, seeing the joy that finally conquers the hearts, the minds of every person who until now was in opposition, I too feel as excited as all of you. But this well-deserved joy cannot create new jobs for the young or a more dignified health for the elderly. The joy that pervades every road will not make our roads safer for tomorrow.
This victory is not our point of arrival but only our starting point.
This victory is a wind of change that blows freely throughout the country, but now the hard work begins and we need to bring this change to families and communities throughout our ruined country.
But the change we all want will not come overnight. Getting there will not be easy because, as I have seen during my life, good things are never easy. It is necessary to want to arrive, and we must work hard and make sacrifices to achieve this goal. All together present here we have shown that we want to make this Renaissance happen very quickly. Now we have to work together and make sacrifices to make it come true. And we will work hard. Together. As a team. A great team that today has won only the right to be put to the test, and that tomorrow it must start working to win this test.
I happened to say, until yesterday, unpleasant words about my predecessor, and not a few he said about me. This happens in the political battle, but it happens more in undeveloped democracies like ours, where the power of the people often degrades becoming the power of a man. But tonight I want to thank him for all the good, that perhaps tomorrow's story can objectively evaluate better than I do today, and wish all the best in his future private life.
And now that the elections are over, I want my willingness to serve with dedication all Albanians, not just those who voted for the winners, to be very clear. I do not regard the plebiscitary vote of the elections as a triumph of our party and even less as a personal triumph for me.
Indeed, the majority that the Albanians have given us makes the enormous challenges we have to win with our government even more realistic. Part of this challenge is the fact that no voter on the other side must feel threatened. No employee who serves this country due to his merit must feel initiated. No media organ that has supported my opponent must feel threatened. Everyone deserves our respect and we must all prove that the change will not harm anyone who has not done wrong by violating the laws of this country.
I cannot fail to confess to you today that this is the most proud moment of my life. But, amid the pride I feel for myself and the humility I feel towards the enormous trust you have invested in me, humility overcomes deeply I will be your prime minister, but also your first servant.
The task will be mine, the power will be yours.
I will not forget this. But please, don't forget it yourself. Not for me, but for the good of Albania that we must contribute to revive together.
