The foundation Down Syndrome Albania , based in Tirana, protested before Parliament at the beginning of the plenary session which marked the return to political activity after the summer break.
The foundation's protest was against the language used by the right-wing MP Myslim Murrizi during a debate with a social media commentator.
Equipped with signs in hand with the writing 'Please apologize and resign, fight your ignorance, I too have feelings and I love !! You too, right? Down syndrome is not a disease ", the famous singer Landi Hysi from the 'West Side Family' group joined the protest, as did other public figures supporting them.
Murrizi, in a Facebook post, had addressed a citizen as 'down' during a debate, which had led to the reaction of the foundation.
"We believe that the language used by the parliamentarian is harmful to the community of people with disabilities and in particular those with Down syndrome and their families as it incites discrimination, hatred, reinforces stereotypes and affects their dignity and their family". This emphasizes Emanuela Pepkola Zaimi, Director of the Foundation.
The protest was successful.
MP Murrizi publicly apologized for the offense.
Not only. He has not spared accusations to all those associations which, according to him, receive funding for this category of people with disabilities but do not offer adequate assistance to families.
