Peza is the place where one of the most important events for the unification of the Albanians against foreign invaders was held during the Second World War: there, in fact, the parliament for the Peza conference of 16 Settembre 1942 met.
Conference in which some important decisions were taken, such as:
- The creation of the anti-fascist front, where the anti-fascists would be part regardless of their faith and their ideas.
- The mobilization of the people in war against the fascist domination.
- The establishment of the national-liberal council throughout the country.
- The establishment of a free, independent and democratic Albania after the war.
- Albania's alliance with the Anglo-Soviet-American anti-fascist coalition.
Today, after 77 years, we remember the event in which the foundations of national unification were built.
The statements of the Albanian policy
Among the present of the Albanian politics for the ceremony also the President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, and the Deputy Prime Minister, Erion Braçe. Meta and Veliaj were also photographed during a handshake, a very rare event seen in recent months in the Albanian political environment.
"Peza is a sacred place for all Albanians. Peza was martyred, burned but never surrendered to the invaders. Peza's conference laid the foundation for anti-fascism and was the first pluralist conference.
The anniversary of liberation invites us to preserve the values for the education of generations, because all that Albania has today is thanks to sacrifice. Today the national goal is integration and should not be delayed by political antagonism. ”- declared the president Meta.
Deputy Prime Minister Braçe, on the other hand, sent strong messages to those who say there was no war.
"We are used to feeling that the war did not exist and that there were no martyrs. The war was not built, it was hard and led to bloodshed. During this war we did not make mistakes, the Albanian people did not make mistakes in organizing the resistance.
We were not disappointed when we came to Peza and we invited the Albanian people to unite. We were not wrong in founding the national liberation army. Don't forget betrayal and traitors.
The governments had declared war on England, France and the United States. It was people who corrected the decisions of those governments, it was the Albanians who united in the largest anti-fascist coalition. It was Albanians, men and women, boys and girls who gave freedom and independence to this country."- said Braçe.
The successes achieved in the common war of the Albanian people against fascism made possible the Peza conference on 16 September 1942. Representatives of the various political currents of the country participated in it, but the communist party led by Enver hoxha.
The people's organization was called the National Liberation Front. This front would have become a pluralist organization and its organs, for the mobilization of the people in arms, would have been the local national liberation councils. These councils were accepted by all the participants, but they were not to be dominated by a single political force.
The discussions that took place during the conference regarding the naming of the partisan groups and the affixing of the red star on the hat led to the clash of some nationalists with the communist party. The conference chose the governing body of the front, the national common council, composed of some members chosen by the PKSH (Communist Party).
The decisions of the first conference were well received by the people and some military actions followed, such as the one in the city of Skrapar, which led to the liberation of this country. The 17 September of the 1942 in the city of Tirana was organized a protest by women.
