The Socialist Party invites all citizens to go down to the boulevard "The Martyrs of the Nation" on January 21 to commemorate the 4 people who died on the same day last year. The invitation comes from the socialist leader Rama in a press statement, after consultation with the other leaders of the opposition parties.Opposition supporters will gather in front of the Government headquarters "To remember the martyrs and honor their families, as the Albanian traditions foresee". The anti-government protest of the January 21 2011 it turned into violent clashes between some opposition protesters and the police. The protesters targeted the police cordon set up to protect the government headquarters, using sticks, stones and Molotov cocktails.
The police responded with tear gas and water cannons. Then it was the turn of the Republic Guard who intervened by shooting in the air using blanks and live bullets, as evidenced by the expertise of the prosecutor. In those moments three people died instantly, a fourth died in the hospital.
One year after their death, the murders are still being investigated. The investigation is parallel: on the one hand it investigates those responsible for the death of the demonstrators, and some government officials suspected of having destroyed the evidence; on the other, on the organizers of the protest and on the violent elements that had organized the attack on the police, including the shadow of the coup denounced by Berisha.
In a joint statement on Wednesday, the EU, US and OSCE ambassadors in Tirana supported the prosecutor, who has so far received little support from the government and the police."It is necessary to shed light on the events of 21 January through a credible judicial procedure, with an independent investigation and free from political interference"ambassadors said."The Albanian people rightly expect justice to be done. In this context, we believe that the Albanian Attorney General's office is the most suitable institution to conduct this investigation, which has our full confidence and support "they added.
