Cooperation projects and interventions to make the water distribution network more efficient a Tirana.
In the Albanian capital, Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj met the president of the Puglia Region Michele Emiliano, on an institutional visit after the first agreements made last September in Bari (https://www.albanianews.it )
The meeting with the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama was held at the office of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and lasted over an hour: "We had a wonderful and fruitful interview - said Emiliano at the end - with reference to the many cooperation projects that are in progress between Puglia and Albania. In particular, we have redefined the common interest in making the water distribution network of the city of Tirana more efficient. We also imagined, at the urging of the premier, to build together an agreement between the University of Bari and the University of Tirana to allow students from both countries a better education. And, above all, we have designed with sentiment, but also with reason, the future of both our territories. An interview of which I was absolutely honored and which I hope will soon lead to concrete results, as President Edi Rama asks ".
MEMORANDUM - In the Municipality of Tirana the memorandum defining the bilateral agreement between the Municipality of Tirana, through the Tirana UKT water and sewerage joint-stock company, and the Puglia Region through the AQP for collaboration in the sector was signed of water and sewerage management in Tirana.
AQP will carry out a technical-administrative audit on the water and sewerage system of the Albanian city to define its efficiency model. Subsequently it will provide advanced engineering and training services. The parties will then sign joint ventures to finance and implement infrastructures for the supply and distribution of water and sewage and purification networks.
The mayor Erion Veliaj said: "Thanks to President Emiliano for having wanted this meeting. From today we begin a concrete work from which one million inhabitants will benefit, that is the population today supplied by the Tirana Aqueduct. Our ambition is to guarantee a supply of 24 hours water on 24 and, above all, the excellent quality. At the moment, we still record losses for 70% and supplies only for eleven hours a day.
Today we are entering into an agreement with one of the best water management companies in Europe, so that the AQP experience can also become ours. We also intend to use every drop of water optimally, also because it is unacceptable for a country like ours, which enjoys such important water resources, to fail to fully dispose of it. The first step will be the audit of the Tirana aqueduct to understand in financial and technical terms how to intervene to identify the illegal connections to the network and have a complete picture of the situation. After the audit we will then proceed to the concrete phase of investments ".
Veliaj, who took the lead in the provincial capital for only a hundred days, stressed that "we are changing course: we want to make the collection more efficient, limit losses and make our company sustainable through targeted investments. Our ambition is to bring the aqueduct to profit, try to create income and improve waste management. For this I conclude by wishing the technical team a good job and thanking Puglia for institutional support. We are united by a common goal of improvement, this is the first time that we really move from words to deeds. We hope this is the beginning of a long and fruitful friendship ".
"It is clear that the Albanian government and the city of Tirana do not want to waste precious time or lose themselves in protocols that remain only on paper, but concretely demonstrate - Emiliano said - that things are changing for the better. This is our own spirit. We want to show that Aqp is not only the largest aqueduct in Europe, but is also the largest design group in southern Italy capable of changing the history of Puglia and southern Italy, creating technical and architectural works of extraordinary value and sharing his experience in support of other countries. Of course, even Italy fights like many other realities against the economic crisis, but it is doing so by keeping its head high. From Puglia, raising his head, one of the most beautiful things we observe is Albania. If we make a good figure with the Apulian Aqueduct, if we reach the set goals, we will not only take an extraordinary economic result, but will strengthen a bond that will lead us to do great things together ".
In this sense, Emiliano also said: "We have the task of explaining to Italians how important it is to strengthen this link with Albania. Thirty thousand Albanians live permanently in Puglia and we feel this as a sister land. Here in Tirana I register a strong desire to do business. I return to Albania after twenty years and congratulate myself on the progress made. Having announced the desire to start this path with President Edi Rama only a few weeks ago during the Fiera del Levante, and to meet again at this meeting, demonstrates the interest we have in this operation. We hope to make up for lost time, in strategic terms, over the last twenty years. We have the responsibility as Puglia Region, through the Managing Authority, to coordinate the project for Albania and Montenegro in the context of European policies.
Today we are in Tirana with the aim of achieving new operational results with the support of the Region and the Italian authorities ".
