The prime minister of Northern Macedonia, Zoran Zaev, has denied the rumors that the European Union is preparing a "European economic zone" for the Western Balkan countries after the failure to start of accession negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia.
The Macedonian prime minister, in this sense, was keen to stress that no other alternative to full EU membership will be accepted:
"Our country is in the EU and we will not accept any other offer. The whole world speaks of us and of what we have done. We have fulfilled our duties and have earned the start of membership talks.
We want what we deserve, nothing else. We do not accept any other alternative, such as partnerships and economic projects. For us there is only full membership in the EU. ”- Zaev stated yesterday during a demonstration by the SDSM party in Prilep.
Zaev also expressed his disappointment at the negative verdict from the European Council summit, stating, however, that the verdict will not change the ultimate goal of joining Northern Macedonia in the EU.
"It wasn't really right for us after they made promises. They discussed until the 2.30 in the morning but unfortunately injustice occurred. But I want to convince you that this injustice against our country will make us rise again, because everyone is talking about injustice. ”- stressed Zaev.
The opposition's response
Meanwhile, during another rally chaired by members of the opposition party VMRO-DPMNE, leader Hristijan Mickovski accused the government of not starting negotiations:
"We should all be concerned because we did not get a date for membership due to the corruption, indecency and criminality of the person (Zaev, ed) who wanted to privatize the European future of our country.
Only for this reason we did not get a date, all the rest is a big yes because we are citizens of Europe, we belong to Europe and there is our future to which we will arrive with the victory in the 12 April elections."- declared the leader of VMRO-DPMNE, Hristijan Mickovski.
The two main parties of the country, SDSM and VMRO-DPMNE, have started their election campaign immediately after the agreement reached between the parties for the parliamentary early elections to be held on April 12.
