The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Avdullah Hoti, Germany is expected to remove the visa regime for Kosovar citizens in the Schengen area during the next term of office for the presidency of the European Union.
"Germany is taking over the EU presidency at a very important time for Europe's health and economy. We are very grateful to the German government for the continued commitment to enlargement of the EU and we expect that the visa regime for citizens of Kosovo will be removed during this period.. " - wrote Prime Minister Hoti on his social profiles.
Kosovo has met all the criteria for visa liberalization, as confirmed also by the European Parliament; now the Kosovar authorities are just waiting for the EU to keep its word.
Kosovo, EU parliamentarians write to Merkel
On Tuesday 30 June - as reported by DW - a group of MEPs from the European Union sent a letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, asking to put the issue of visa liberalization for Kosovo on the agenda of the German presidency to the European Council.
"Kosovo has met the criteria requested two years ago, now it's up to us to keep our promise. When a country fulfills what has been requested of it without obtaining the benefits promised by us, we lose our credibility. How can we request other reforms in these countries if they are not sure that they will benefit from their work?”- reads the letter of deputies made public by the Kosovar Prime Minister.
Grenell welcomes the EU initiative
The United States Special Representative for the Kosovo-Serbia talks, Richard Grenell, welcomed the initiative of EU parliamentarians:
"Finally good news. The attention of the United States to economic normalization has motivated Europeans to act. We are happy to see them take the lead.”- wrote Grenell on Twitter.
The latter had previously discussed with the rapporteur of the European Parliament for Kosovo, Viola von Cramon, who had criticized the high diplomatic representative for her approach in the Kosovo-Serbia talks, who in response asked Cramon not to criticize the American administration for everything and to focus on visa liberalization for Kosovo:
"Viola, instead of criticizing everything the Trump administration does to help economic normalization between Kosovo and Serbia, why not focus on the only thing you need to do: visa liberalization for Kosovo.”- reads Grenell's tweet.
Kosovo is the only country in the Western Balkans that does not yet enjoy the right to free movement in the Schengen area, despite the fact that European institutions have already confirmed several times that Kosovo has met all the criteria for liberalization. For this to happen, all EU countries will have to vote in favor.
