The Parliament of Kosovo with 66 yes and 10 abstentions voted confidence in the new government composed of the Vetëvendosja Movement and the Democratic League of Kosovo. Oppositions have left the courtroom. The new premier will be Albin Kurti.
Confidence comes four months after the early elections, with long and exhausting negotiations. Only yesterday was it finally reached an agreement to form a new government.
The government team will consist of 15 ministers including 6 from Kurti's VetëVendosje Movement, and 6 others from the Democratic League of Kosovo. Three departments instead go to minorities (Roma, Egyptians, etc.)
It should be noted that the Kurti government team is more downsized than the previous Haradinaj government, having only 15 ministers instead of 21, and 33 deputy ministers instead of 80. In fact, Kurti said yesterday: "This shows that the government has made a big difference even before starting to work, as it is the leanest in the history of Kosovo"
33% of the members of the Kurti government are women. During the vote, the Albanian opposition parties and the Srpska list left the Chamber.
In his speech in Parliament, Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that a new chapter of the state of Kosovo has been opened today. According to him, what seemed impossible today has become possible.
"It could not be and cannot be otherwise. Our people have never endured submission. Today we didn't win, today the citizens won. Power and state is belongs to citizens as it should be. We are all replaceable. From today, regardless of how you voted, I will be the premier of all of you " Kurti said
To then add that “today begins the path of change that everyone has been waiting for". Kurti says that the old way of doing politics ends today.
"We keep the powers divided into a common state. People choose us to work for them and not for our interests. Today begins a new chapter for both domestic and foreign policy. The time has come when we will speak in a coordinated way and with one voice. To those who are reluctant to believe it, we can only say that we will work to deserve their recognition and respect " Kurti concluded.
