At the second Kosovo Producers Convention, organized by the Kosovo Producers Association, Prime Minister Albin Kurti stressed the importance of local producers, who are a pillar of Kosovo society and economy.
Premier Kurti reiterated his intention to abolish customs duties 100% to goods from Serbia, a measure imposed by the Haradinaj government at the end of 2018 "By introducing reciprocity measures to protect local producers".
“We will replace duties with reciprocity. The tariff was a decision of the previous government, instead we focus on reciprocity as a safeguard for local producers " Kurti said as he made it known that he had appointed Minister Rozeta Hajdari to study the concrete steps for the removal of customs tariffs.
"Minister Hajdari has taken some measures to abolish tariffs, setting up a working group that will collect all information on trade barriers with Serbia, and therefore we will take a decision to withdraw tariffs. We are a sovereign state and will act as such "Kurti said.
The former prime minister, Ramush Haradinaj, he said that the abolition of the tax and the establishment of reciprocity are not the same thing.
According to him, Serbia does not deserve such an economic treatment before recognizing Kosovo.
“I have publicly asked Kurti not to abolish tariffs. But he decided without a thorough analysis to replace the removal of tariffs with reciprocity. There is no point in returning economic power to Serbia if it does not recognize you. "
Meanwhile, the Serbian Minister of Commerce, Rasim Ljajic, stated that the damage to Serbia after theimposition of the tax by Kosovo 14 months ago, they reached the figure of 461 million euro.
The Kosovo government had decided to impose 100% customs duties against Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina at the end of 2018. The decision had come in response to Serbia's campaign, which had as its objective to question the recognition of Kosovo by of many countries that had already recognized its independence.
It was a decision strongly criticized by both Brussels and the USA.
