Renunciation of Kosovo citizenship has reached worrying numbers in recent years. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kosovo, 5394 Kosovo citizens gave up citizenship only in 2019 (a constant trend compared to past years)
Most citizens of Kosovo have chosen German, Austrian, Slovenian, Croatian, etc. citizenship. Citizens who have changed citizenship say they have done it reluctantly. A painful decision to offer a better future to their families and children.
According to data from the 2019 youth survey conducted by German foundation Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Foundation, and reported by Deutsche Welle, about 40% of Kosovo Albanians want to migrate for a short period, less than five years. Economic reasons are cited as the main reason for migration by about 63 percent of those who wish to leave Kosovo to move to another country. Switzerland and Germany are the favorite destinations of the new Kosovar emigrants, destinations dreamed of by 49% of the interviewees.
The choice of Serbian citizenship
The stalemate on visa liberalization, the country's inability to move towards development, the high unemployment rate in Kosovo meant that Kosovar citizens were looking for other alternatives to travel freely. Some of them decided to apply for Serbian citizenship in order to be able to move freely.
Some Kosovo Albanians have already obtained Albanian citizenship, although the law on citizenship that lies in the parliament of the Eagle Country, and which would allow members of the Albanian diaspora to acquire citizenship more easily, has not yet been approved.
For the acquisition of the latter, according to the proposal, it will be sufficient to demonstrate that the ancestors of the citizens in question lived in Albanian territories, following that acquisition process called "Ius sanguinis".
In addition to ordinary citizens, who have decided to simultaneously hold one Kosovar passport and another from the neighboring state, there are also politicians and artists from Kosovo who came into possession of an Albanian passport. Era Istrefi, Majlinda Kelmendi, Edita Tahiri and others are just some of the names of famous people from Kosovo who hold Albanian passports.
