The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has accepted Kosovo as a new member. Recognition by the IMF is considered an important step to guarantee worldwide recognition as an independent state and to have access to international aid.
According to senior IMF officials, Serbia and Russia were against accepting Kosovo as a member while the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom insisted on the latter's accession. Serbia had written to all 185 members of the IMF, asking to reject Kosovo's request.
The news was confirmed this Tuesday by the Kosovar Foreign Minister, Valona Qitaku.
