Albania has the lowest number of doctors per capita in the entire Balkan area; a situation that has been worsening in recent years due to the emigration of most of the medical staff to Germany, which has caused a lack of medical personnel, especially in mountain areas.
As reported by the Albanian Albanian business magazine Monitor, according to the global health observatory, Albania has only 1.2 doctors every 1000 inhabitants, the lowest value in the Balkans and, unfortunately, not the only one considering that other health figures as well nurses lack staff.
These staff shortages are even more pronounced in some mountain areas such as Librazhd and Perrenjas, two fairly large districts that are suffering in recent months - in addition to the lack of infrastructure - than that of medical personnel. The citizens of these areas, in fact, continue to complain about the lack of qualified doctors, a part of which has emigrated to richer countries of the European Union such as Germany.
"Our area has been suffering from a lack of doctors and nurses for years. The nurse comes only once a week, and when we get sick we are forced to call her to make her come. ”- says a citizen of the Librazhd district.
The statements of the inhabitants of the two areas show that the coverage of the medical ambulatory staff is sporadic and that the few remaining doctors must be able to cover many villages simultaneously; this makes their work more difficult and reduces patients' direct access to medical personnel.
Part-time health service
After the administrative division of 2015, Librazhd and Prrenjas were divided into two municipalities, which form a total population of 77.132 inhabitants.
Although during the last decade there have been investments in health centers and ambulances in the villages of these two districts, not wherever the conditions are appropriate or at appropriate levels; this is caused, for the most part, by the lack of doctors or their part-time presence.
These absences become much more problematic during the winter period: last year, for example, a patient from the village of Sopot was forced to evacuate by helicopter to the municipal hospital of Librazhd because in the village there were neither doctors nor nurses .
In other cases, however, some families were forced to go to the nearest hospital with mules, since the connecting roads were impassable.
