It seems that the fate of the accession negotiations for Albania and Northern Macedonia has been decided and the verdict is negative.
This is what was stated by the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policies, Johannes Hahn, in a message on Twitter, from which it is deduced that the EU leaders failed to find an agreement on the opening of negotiations with Albania and Northern Macedonia.
Furthermore, Hahn says that the EU's decision not to open negotiations with the two countries could lead to serious consequences, up to the destabilization of the Western Balkans
# EU leaders failed to live up to their commitment to open #accession negotiations with #NorthMacedonia and #Albania at #EUCO. This is a matter of extreme disappointment. # EU #MS now need to clarify how serious their commitment is to the #WesternBalkans' # EU integration. 1 / 4

"European leaders have not lived up to their commitment to open negotiations with North Macedonia and Albania at the European Council. This is an extremely disappointing issue. It is necessary to clarify now how serious their commitment is to the integration of the Western Balkans into the EU.
I thank all those who yesterday put all their efforts into making an exceptional decision of strategic importance for the EU and fought to send a signal of hope to the citizens of the Western Balkans.
As already mentioned in Luxembourg, this is not a moment of glory for the EU. Refusing the recognition of proven progress will have negative consequences, including the risk of destabilizing the Western Balkans, with a full impact on the EU ".
It is our responsibility now to be with the countries whose citizens are rightly disappointed to the core and continue to do everything possible to support them. The integration of the Western Balkans is and remains an important strategic policy, in our common interest "he concluded.
Ansa, the Macedonian prime minister resigns
Following the decision of the European council, according to ANSA, the prime minister of Northern Macedonia, Zoran Zaev, resigned. This is what is learned from European diplomatic sources on the sidelines of the EU summit where Member States have not reached an agreement to start accession negotiations with Northern Macedonia and Albania.
Rama: whatever happens with the negotiations there will be no early elections
The Prime Minister Rama, instead, after returning from Brussels, intervened yesterday evening during the political / social television program "Open" on Top channel, to answer the questions of the analysts present, on the consequences that the decision of the European Community will have on the opening or not of negotiations with Albania.
When asked if Albania will go towards early elections, in the event of a negative EU response, Rama categorically denied it. However, Prime Minister Rama said that the last word has not yet been pronounced and that the decision will be taken today, despite the limited possibility of obtaining a positive response.
Count, failure to start negotiations for Albania and Northern Macedonia, "historical error"
"It went wrong. I told my colleagues that this is a date with history. In the 1400 those territories and those communities fall under the Ottoman Empire. In the aftermath of the Second World War they fell under the communist regime. It is from a life that they want to enter Europe their aspiration is to enter Europe. Yesterday's will be remembered for a historical error and I am very sorry "- said Conte.
"I have tried to convince everyone (about) this aspiration, among other things of communities that are mostly Muslim, that therefore have a European cultural formation, this is a great strength. We absolutely had to open. It was not a question of deciding whether to join them or not, but to start the accession negotiations. I am very sorry and I am very close to the Albanian and Northern Macedonia communities. They made a lot of efforts" - he added.
"Up to here, Europe, the Commission, we have been promoters of a reform project. I hope that this disappointment, this anguish will not precipitate them into the biggest distress and continue. Italy will always be close to them, will always defend them, will continue to be close to them"- concluded the premier.
