Germany wants the Western Balkan states to be aligned with the European Union and first of all we want to reach an agreement on starting accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia at the next European Council meeting in March.
This was stated today, January 27, by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a joint press conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama in Berlin.
“On behalf of the German government, I would like to express unequivocal support for the European perspective of Albania and all the western Balkans. We want all these countries to be closer to the EU and above all, we want to reach an agreement at the next meeting of the European Council in March to start the accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia at the next meeting of the European Council. Both countries have had significant successes and these have been registered by the European Council and we will work hard to achieve a positive result in March, "said Merkel.
German Chancellor Merkel stressed that “I think the future of these two countries is in the EU, it is also in our interest. Anyone who looks closely at the map of Europe and knows the geopolitical framework, knows that it is better for everyone, that one day they were members of the EU. The new European Commission intends to become a Commission that also aims to emphasize the geopolitical dimension, therefore it offers even more possibilities to move this process decisively ".
Concerning the consequences of the earthquake in Albania and the preparations for the Donors' Conference to be held in Brussels on 17 February next, Merkel said that “Many people have lost their homes, 51 people have lost their lives, I am glad that the Commission has sent invitations to a donor conference and Germany will participate in this conference. The cooperation and readiness for assistance in the region has been impressive. "Chancellor Merkel said that" this has been a serious blow to Albania, we will talk about a series of bilateral relations, economic relations and the reform course of the Albania".
As for justice reform, Merkel stressed that “Much has been achieved and this reform must continue in this way to be completed. This reform is of fundamental importance for the future of Albania, for the German federal government I mean that we clearly adhere to the perspective of Albania and all the Western Balkans in the EU ".
