According to the study carried out by the Institute of European Policies in Kosovo, more than 20.000 Albanian citizens who applied for asylum in 2019 are more than double the value of all the other requests from other countries in the region.
Behind the country of the Eagles but very distant - in the western Balkans - there is Serbia, with less than 4.000 asylum applications for 2019. Follow North Macedonia (with 2680 requests), Kosovo (2355 requests), Bosnia ( 1355 requests) and Montenegro (220 requests).
Unlike what happened in recent years, the 'preferred' destination of the asylum requests of Albanian citizens is no longer Germany but France, Great Britain and Greece.
Asylum requests by inhabitants: Albania ranks first
The Albanian economic magazine Monitor has carried out population-based calculations to have comparable data between countries, where for a few consecutive years, small Albania is in first place in the world for asylum applications, in relation to the number of inhabitants.
In terms of population, with a significant margin, Syrians are in second place, with 39 questions per 10.000 inhabitants, or about 20 less than Albanians. The second on the list are the Afghans, with 17 out of 10.000, followed by Venezuela with 14, Iraq and Colombia with 9 and 7, respectively.
Of the top 10 countries of origin, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and Nigeria have the least number of questions in terms of population. Thus, the Turks and Iranians asked 3 questions per 10.000 inhabitants, followed by Pakistani and Nigerians with 1 question.
Këlliçi: 70% of Albanian asylum seekers are under 35 years old
The leader of the Democratic Party Youth Forum, Belind Këlliçi, claims - as reported by Euronews Albania - that 70% of Albanian asylum seekers are under 35 years old and that the government has no youth incentive program to stem this trend:
"The appalling figures of our country cannot even be compared to the total of the other countries in the region, while Edi Rama continues to attribute this phenomenon to the liberalization of visas, assuming no responsibility. " - said Këlliçi.
In total, between 2009 and 2019, more than 196.000 Albanian citizens have applied for asylum in the countries of the European Union. Kosovo ranks second with more than 174.000 asylum requests in this period. The boom year of asylum applications was 2015, with more than 66.000 requests from Albania and approximately 67.000 from Kosovo.
