The international donor conference, organized by the European Union to support post-earthquake reconstruction in Albania, will be held in Brussels on 17 February as announced by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
"The EU is pleased to announce that the donor conference for Albania will be held on February 17th. The conference is organized following the terrible earthquake in Albania. We want to help the country in its reconstruction. ”- said President von der Leyen last week on the occasion of the visit of the College of Commissioners to Zagreb, for the start of the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU.
The European Union attaches the highest priority to the reconstruction of Albania and will help to coordinate an international response and to collect the financial support needed to help the long-term efforts that will be needed to achieve this. The goal is also to help strengthen Albania's ability to prepare and manage disaster response.
"The donors' conference to help Albania in reconstruction following the devastating earthquake of 26 November last year, will take place in February on February 17, 2020. The European Union is at the side of Albania.”- wrote the European Union ambassador to Albania, Luigi Soreca, on Twitter.
The European Commission has already contributed directly to the reconstruction of Albania - in the very first days after the tragic earthquake of 26 November - by allocating 15 million euros in support of the Albanian people.
The earthquake in Albania
On 26 November 2019, a violent earthquake of magnitude 6.4 struck Albania causing 51 deaths, more than a thousand injured, 14.000 injured and tens of thousands of damaged buildings (a large part seriously damaged or destroyed).
The European Union immediately activated itself by sending search and rescue teams to the country of the Eagles, at the request of the Albanian government. These teams were then joined by experts and engineers to estimate the total damage of the earthquake in a way that can offer a picture as complete as possible during the donors' conference on February 17th.
