The rankings of the most important 100 companies in the country show that the Albanian economy has a major structural problem. It does not produce, but is dominated by commercial activities, the construction sector and the services sector.
Top Channel has published the list of 100 companies that have achieved the highest number of revenues in the 2017. According to data published by the official bodies, in total the most productive 100 companies have collected about six billion euros, or the 53% Albanian domestic product. But what are these companies?
For the 2017, there is a public company on the top step of the Albanian economy podium. It is the public electricity distribution operator OSHEE, which has been in first place for some years: the body that represents the state monopoly of energy distribution has grossed around 440 million euros.
2. Banka Kombëtare Tregtare (BKT)
In second place is the Turkish bank Banka Kombëtare Tregtare (BKT) with around 370 million euros.
3. Kastrati Group
In third place is the Kastrati group with around 340 million euros.
The top ten places in this ranking are dominated by oil companies; besides Kastrati, there are also Bankers Petroleum, Europetrol e Gen Claudis.
The remaining seats of the top 10 are occupied by two telecommunications companies such as Vodafone and Info Telekom, a company that is working in Albania for the construction of the trans-Adriatic pipeline, and the Turkish company Institution, which despite having failed for some time continues in its activity with around 200 million euros per year.
The entire ranking is dominated by three main categories: half are trading activities, 26 are service companies, while fifteen are companies employed in the construction sector. Furthermore, in this list there are only 10 production companies, which are mainly used in the exploitation of natural resources or in the field of building materials.
Therefore, Albania lacks production activities and industrial companies, which create national brands and an additional value for the country's economy. In their place, the structure of the economy is dominated by public companies, trade activities and service companies.
