Published by the Albanian economic magazine Monitor and during a round table on 'The Berlin process: strengthening regional relations and cooperation ', organized with the support ofDutch ambassador to Tirana, the news is of those long awaited: the upgrading of the national railway section.
Priorities of European interest, with several feasibility studies that are now being examined by sector technicians.
Wide-ranging infrastructure project, since it also includes the extension to Rinas, the extra-urban area where the Mother Teresa airport is located. The new railway network, therefore, will not only have a national value, but will serve to connect Albania with the rest of the Region.
The contract, with a total cost of 92 million euros, foresees March 2021 as the deadline to attempt to be operational as early as the following June.
40% of the total funding for the work will come from a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, 42% from grants and 18% from participation from the Albanian national budget. The kilometers covered by the redevelopment are almost 35 that separate Tirana and Durres, plus a new extension of another 7, 4 km to reach Rinas.
The other railway expansion projects in Albania
Work is underway on the detailed project of the Vlora-Hani Hotit railway, which is expected to be completed in November 2020. This project is made possible by a 4,5 million euro grant awarded by the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF).
La railway Durres - Rrogozhinë - Pogradec - Lin - Macedonia (Pan European Corridor VIII- Pan-European Corridor VIII) is part of a railways network that would cross 6 western Balkan countries, to be completed by 2023, with the prospect of an extension of the Eastern Corridor, the East Med TEN-T Corridor .
In fact, a big problem connected to this project, which in itself is already very expensive - we are talking about Cost 600 million euros- emerged from the original exit of the section, scheduled in Lin. Concerns about the environmental impact of the project in this area with its extremely delicate eco-system slowed the progress of the works.
Albania-Greece rail link, still under discussion
A pre-feasibility study for the link rail Albania - (Kapshticë / Kristalopigi) - Greece it is ongoing under the INTERREG CBC Albania-Greece program. The project will be completed in early 2021 and then applied for the feasibility study and detailed design.
The railway connection with Greece is particularly favorable and, if realized, two passenger trains could leave every day, allowing it to connect with Europe as a whole.
