What can push fruit and vegetable exports to European markets? Food safety standards and certifications are certainly the first step.
This is what was done by the exporting agricultural company of Lushnjë "Doni Fruit", which - through the mediation of "RisiAlbania" - obtained the GLOBALG.AP certification from "Sativa", an internationally accredited certification body.
The certificates were awarded the 13 in September during a ceremony organized at the “Doni Fruit” plant, which was attended by the Albanian Minister for the protection of entrepreneurship, Eduard Shalsi, and the deputy head of the mission of the Swiss embassy in Albania, Patrik Meier.
"Our Swiss project 'RisiAlbania' supports exporters like “Doni Fruits ”in managing GlobalG.AP standards, a guarantee for food safety and safe working conditions for employees.
Exporters thus secure contracts with buyers from the EU, which in turn means a stronger and more reliable relationship with supplier farmers and more jobs for young people, to meet the growing demand in Switzerland and in the markets of EU of environmentally friendly products "- said Patrik Meier.
Minister Shalsi also congratulated the company and its 58 farmers for the result achieved:
"This result represents an opportunity to pursue for other companies and farmers in Albania, and I can assure you that the Albanian government will support farmers and exporters with greater awareness of the GlobalG.AP group certification."- said the minister.
This is the first time that the GLOBALG.AP group certification is provided to an exporter with such a large group of Albanian farmers.
"The reason we started this business was the demand of the international market for certified products. We had information on the GlobalG.AP certification, but we were afraid to start this process. Thanks to our partners RisiAlbania and Albinspekt we were able to receive the certification, a great result for our company."- said Ejup Ahmeti, CEO of the company.
What can push Albanian fruit and vegetable exports into European markets? Standards and certification are a first step….
RisiAlbania, a project of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation carried out by Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation and Partners Albania, is supporting exporters in the management and obtaining of the GlobalG.AP group certification.
By obtaining certification, Albanian exporters access higher value markets and secure better contracts with buyers. RisiAlbania supported by the first exporters in obtaining the certification of the GlobalG.AP group in Albania: the first certification arrived in 2018 when TomatoAL, an exporting company based in Berat, successfully obtained the GlobalG.AP group certification for an initial group of farmers 16.
Their exports to European markets increased by 30% during the first year, increasing the interest of other companies and farmers to obtain group certification. "Doni Fruits" today followed suit with a larger group of farmers and more certified raw materials.
