Two weeks from the start of the procedures for the pre-qualification phase for the Tirana-Durazzo railway, the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Damian Gjiknuri, the director general for the enlargement of the European commission Christian Danielsson, the Director of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Albania Matteo Colangeli and the deputy minister of finance and the economy Erion Luçi yesterday they signed the financing agreement for his rehabilitation and the connection with theTirana airport.
The Albanian authorities, in fact, have signed an agreement with the European commission, which has allocated - in the framework of the Western Balkans Investment Framework - 35,4 million for the project.
"The project will have an important economic impact, through the improvement of trade flows and at the same time will offer new jobs, not only in the construction phase but also afterwards."- said the European Commission director yesterday Christian Danielsson.
The total investment will be around 90 million euros: in addition to funding from the European commission, other 36,8 million euros have been loaned by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) while the remainder, scarce twenty million euro, should be covered by the government.
The Tirana-Durres railway
The new railway line will be the same as the existing one with the addition of a stop near theTirana airport. The will also change Tirana terminal, which will be the new boulevard. In addition, travel speed will increase: from 40 km / h it will increase to around 100 km / h.
The realization of this project will aim to facilitate the transit of passengers and goods by increasing transport efficiency. It is expected that every year around 1,4 millions of passengers will be transported, since most of the country's economic activity takes place in the industrial area between Tirana and Durazzo.
The reactivation of this railway line and the installation of new trains represent the first of a great project for the modernization of Albania. This project involves the restoration of other lines, for a total cost that exceeds 427 million for the rehabilitation of the entire disastrous Albanian railway network.
