For more than 24 hours, at the police headquarters in Tirana, there has been a protest from many citizens who demand the release of 23 protesters arrested for the clashes and riots that took place in Kukës on Saturday.
In the last few hours, the deputies of the Democratic party, the main opposition party, have also joined the citizens.
Initially the Protestants were right on the sidewalk in front of the police station but, later, the police ordered the move to the street to allow ordinary citizens to pass along that stretch of the pavement; as a result, road traffic has been blocked for hours now.
Meanwhile, the popular legislative institution ('the people's lawyer') has been concerned about inspecting the rooms where the arrested protesters have been detained: they have also asked the police authorities to provide food and medical treatment to the detainees to avoid to classify their condition as inhuman treatment.
The protest is over the weekend degenerated in tough clashes with the police. The protesters threw stones at the police, lined up in front of the toll booths, and then tried to break through the cordon.
Riot units responded to bludgeons, and then retreated. The demonstrators subsequently attacked the toll booths that were first set on fire and then completely destroyed.

The denunciation of the municipal council of Kukës
Kukës municipal councilors have sued prosecutors and police officers for issuing and executing the arrest of protesters 23. The charge is that he committed four crimes:
- Not having respected the right to freedom (article 110)
- Abuse of power (article 248)
- Conduct of arbitrary actions (article 250)
- Not having imposed adequate measures to put an end to the facts (article 251)
The methods to end the citizens' protest, the accusation continues, were conducted with methods that characterize totalitarian states, in violation of all the standards and principles enshrined in the Constitution.
For the municipal council of Kukës the arrest warrants were issued by the Kukës prosecutor with a non-impartial act. Without the need for urgent interventions, the execution of the arrests should have been performed in the 07 time band: 00-20: 00:
"Entry into the apartments in the middle of the night, at a time when the relatives of all the prisoners slept and did not pose any social risks, contribute to the abuse of power by public prosecutors and the State Police" - reads in the press release.
The councilors of the Kukës communiqué believe that the citizens have protested for right reasons, against 'an injustice of the government', and for this reason they have destroyed the toll booths assigned to the toll of the motorway tariff.
The next event has been scheduled for next Saturday at 12 hours: 00
