"Today we present the Vlora International Airport, the largest project that Albania and the region have ever seen. An airport that will meet all the conditions and standards "said Minister Balluku.
According to reports from the Minister of Infrastructures, the airport, which will lead to a great development not only of Valona but of the entire surrounding area, "will have a runway in line with international standards and there will also land transoceanic planes. There will be 3.2 km of track, for a width of 60 meters. As announced, Air Albania will soon travel to America ”.
It is estimated that, when fully operational, millions of passengers will pass through the 2 and 3 every year from the new airport.
Edi Rama: the failure of negotiations with the Turks
From the city of Vlora, where he presented the new airport project, Prime Minister Edi Rama also spoke of the failure, in April, of negotiations with the Turkish consortium that had initially submitted the offer for the start of work.
"We tried to reach an agreement with the consortium and after a long negotiation we came to the conclusion that we had no points of proximity to sign an agreement. The demands of the company for guarantees required by the state were beyond our reach. All this happened in a context in which Vlora had not yet reached the image it has today, "said Rama.
For this reason, despite the loss of primary financiers, the project has continued to exist and the Government intends to open an international tender.
According to the Premier, in fact, there is great interest on the part of foreign companies in the Valona airport project, but the winner has yet to be identified. Previously, he stated: "We are studying two options in parallel: either the intervention of a serious foreign company or the construction with an internal budget of the Ministry of Infrastructure, and then entrust its management to an international operator. Because we have no more time to lose and in the spring we want to open the yard ".
Corriere della Sera: Valona airport could be sold to the Italians for 35 years
We mentioned it in a previous article of ours. There were rumors, but in reality no names had been made yet.
Then yesterday the first surprise articles in the Italian press, also rebounded on the Albanian one. Perhaps we wanted to wait for the concomitance of the official presentation of the project by Premier Rama.
Il 'Corriere della Sera' writes that the company Aeroporti di Puglia (which manages the airports of Bari, Brindisi, Foggia and Taranto) at the beginning of September formally expressed interest in the project and a first response could arrive tomorrow, Wednesday, at the Fiera del Levante in Bari , on the occasion of the meeting between the representatives of AdP and the main interested party in Albanian territory, Prime Minister Edi Rama.
The Apulian airport aims at internationalization and that of Vlora airport is a candidate to become a great opportunity, considering the positive surge in southern Albania in terms of tourist accommodation.
PD: The airport deal will be subject to the antimafia law
"Designing the Vlora airport is a dirty business for Edi Rama. No one knows how the design company was selected. There is no regular legal procedure in the documentation of the Albanian state ".
These are the accusations made by Ervin Minarolli, Secretary for Human Resources of the PD, after the presentation of the new project.
"With the Valona airport and the architect Marco Casamonti (convicted in Italy for financial fraud against the University of Genoa, ed), Edi Rama is pursuing a pattern similar to that of the National Theater project, for which he has made a special law ", said Minarolli.
The PD has already announced that it will resort to the new anti-mafia law when the airport project is implemented.
