Valdrin Pjetri, candidate of the socialist party who won the last local elections in Shkoder, resigned his resignation last night.
Pjetri, after taking the 100% of the valid votes in the last elections, was destined to become the first socialist mayor of Scutari, a city firmly anti-communist and always a bulwark of the center-right democratic party.
However, before taking office, he was accused by the democratic opposition of having been convicted in Italy of drug dealing in 2003 (when he was 20 years) and of having been expelled from the beautiful country precisely for this reason. The same democratic party inflicted the decisive blow on Tuesday, publishing documents that would affirm the sentence.
"Under these conditions, my attention and my energies will focus entirely on the resolution and legal clarification of this fact of 17 years ago, for which as far as I know I have never had a legal responsibility.
Aware of the importance of the political image and determined to undertake this legal clarification in the position of common citizen, without weighing anyone down, I decide to resign as mayor of Scutari."- reads the post on Facebook by Valdrin Pjetri.
As a result, the question of Scutari's administrative future remains a big question mark. The procedures stipulate that the President of the Republic will decide new elections for the city but, given that Ilir Meta has refused to recognize the 30 June 2019 elections and their results, this case could lead to further chaos within the Albanian political environment.
Disputes of this kind could be resolved by the Constitutional Court, currently non-operational due to the substantial lack of judges. The Court was made up of 9 judges, of whom 4 did not pass the evaluation provided for by the new reform of the judicial system, 2 passed it and 3 resigned and / or ended their legal mandate.
Rama: nobody can cast shadows on the socialist party
Edi Rama also reacted to the issue with a series of tweets, specifying that his and his party's responsibility is to react to this unworthy individual act:
"Not only Valdrin but even if there was my brother, there is no possibility of casting shadows on the socialist party and on me, in relation to the law and loyalty to the people. The responsibility for each individual unworthy act is of the individual. Our responsibility is how we react to an unworthy individual act.
[...] I never thought that Valdrin could hide the truth from me in relation to the law, but until the truth comes to light, the paths of Valdrin Pjetri and the Socialist Party will be totally separate."- reads the Twitter profile of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
