A traffic network of toxic waste and carcinogens such as asbestos was discovered today by the Albanian police.
The ultimate goal of this network was to carry these hazardous wastes from Italy and download them to the city of Vlora where they would later be buried. I'm you are the arrested so far including a 55 year old woman.
The pattern was discovered thanks to the check in port of Vlora of a ferry from Toast where a significant amount of hazardous waste for man and the environment was seized, legally prohibited in Albania, including asbestos and other fibers with carcinogenic effects.
After receiving operational information, the police managed to block this load without allowing the asbestos to be unloaded from the ferry stopped at the pier of the coastal city.
Confidential state police sources say this is not the first time it has happened; it is suspected that over 15 journeys have been completed, which means that hazardous waste not previously discovered by the police has been buried in our country.
Thanks to the collaboration between the criminal police of Vlora, the border police, the Prosecutor of Vlora and the Ministry of the Environment, the first people involved in this crime plan were discovered, while the operation is underway to identify the involvement of other suspects. The ferry was seized by the police along with the van loaded with asbestos.
It is suspected that the most dangerous waste is hidden inside a dozen barrels with the inscription "ENI", the Italian oil company based in Rome, which for the police contain "hazardous waste", but it is not known exactly which and how dangerous they can be to health. While those arrested claim that the barrels only contain engine oil.
According to the Albanian newspaper Shqiptarja.com who reconstructed the entire scheme of the operation of this network based on confidential police sources, the dangerous substances were brought to Albania through a cleaning company, "Dolphins 1", who prepared all the documentation, disguising toxic waste as cleaning chemicals.
It is suspected that behind the group of people arrested in Albania, there is the Neapolitan mafia, the Camorra, which also deals with toxic waste. In Italy the management of these types of waste has a very high cost therefore it seems that the Camorra has found a network of people in Albania to manage them with a lower cost.
Those arrested will be investigated by the Prosecutor of Valona for the crimes of "smuggling of prohibited goods" and "trafficking of hazardous waste". In addition, some officials from the SPAK (special power of attorney) were sent to Vlora to suspect that the people involved are part of a structured criminal group.
Carlo Bollino: A scandal in the port of Brindisi
A harsh comment towards the security authorities of the port of Brindisi comes from Carlo Bollino, a well-known Italian-Albanian businessman and journalist:
“A scandal in the port of Brindisi. A scandal that outrages me as an Italian citizen and offends me as an Albanian citizen. The ST Damian ferry to Vlora was able to leave the port without hindrance, with the hold transformed into a toxic waste dump !!
In spite of the safety of passengers and all citizens of the country of destination, where that waste would have been underground underground. The scandal was discovered on arrival in the Albanian port by the Albanian police.
But the controls in Italy still exist? Are the security authorities of the port of Brindisi indifferent and therefore complicit? Or all fired for lack of funds?
These images are a national shame, because 'they demonstrate how toxic waste (including mysterious bins labeled Eni and bags of asbestos) can cross our borders in the light of the sun and without any control and that the only attention is now concentrated on foreign citizens, as if they were the poison and not the asbestos. Since 'these traffics are usually in the hands of the Camorra we wait to know if the mafias have extended their tentacles to the port of Brindisi! "
