The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, is on a two-day visit to Tirana with an agenda full of meetings such as that with Prime Minister Rama, President Ilir Meta, representatives of Parliament, the opposition, civil society , students, journalists, etc.
After meeting with Prime Minister Rama this morning, the two held a press conference in which they answered questions from journalists on the integration of Albania into the EU, the changes taking place on the new enlargement methodology and the consensus of the states members. Among the topics, also the initiatives of the Albanian government to fight organized crime and corruption, after the approval of the so-called "anti-KCK" package.
Rama: "Sassoli's contribution has always been precious for Albania"
Prime Minister Rama presented the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli not only as one of the most important figures on the political scene in Brussels, but also as a friend of Albania and a staunch supporter of the enlargement process.
“I would like to emphasize that he was President of the Europe-Albania Friendship Group for several years, making a very valuable contribution to the attempt to shape the true image of Albania, in a constant fight against the prejudices that have beset us for years, implemented by people who do not know Albania but use it for their political programs ", said Rama.
Albania-EU: Sassoli "We expect accession negotiations to start as soon as possible".
For his part, President Sassoli stressed that the vast majority of member countries, the European Parliament and the Commission, are in favor of starting accession negotiations with Albania and that the decision of the EU Council of last October was not a "NO" but only a referral.
“I am convinced that this is only a delay. There has been a slowdown, but the negotiation process must start again ", reiterated Sassoli stressing that "both the European Parliament and the European Commission and the vast majority of member countries have already been in favor at the time. Concerns have been raised to which Albania is responding"
During the press conference, Prime Minister Rama also spoke of the package he called "anti-KÇK".
As a result of the new justice reform, many magistrates have been discharged or expelled from the system for a period of 15 years. Premier Rama coined the new term (KÇK) to indicate a part of the judges and magistrates who collaborate with the criminals, issuing sentences in their favor, exploiting their position before the end of his career. (KÇK = catch what you can NDR).
The initiative created with the aim of fighting organized crime and corruption reinforces the role of the State Police, which assumes the powers that previously belonged to prosecutors. Criminals who fail to justify possession of their properties will lose them as they will be placed under seizure. And they will be put under investigation. According to Rama, all this could not be done before having SPAK (the Special Prosecutor for Anti-Corruption), as it was necessary to resort to corrupt judges and prosecutors, close to dismissal. Now, according to him, the mechanism will work and because we can believe in a justice that fights organized crime against corruption.
The President of the European Parliament David Sassoli stated before the parliament that the anti-KCK package contains both Italian and European elements, praising it as the right way to fight crime and corruption.
“I am happy to see that some experiences in my country can be useful for your country, since I come from a country that knows organized crime well. This reform brings with it something Italian, something European, the opportunity to be strict in the rule of law. This is a fair way to fight corruption. '' Sassoli said.
President David Sassoli, during his speech in the Albanian Parliament, invited both the EU and Albania to adopt new development models.
“I would like to appeal to all our education systems. We have to think about where to invest in the next 7 years. In all programs we would like to have more ambitions to do our best to protect ourselves and allow for greater growth. We do not want a budget with reduced funding but a growing economy.
We have a common challenge and your reflection here and today will be useful.
We need to implement reforms to be included in this term to become leaders in climate change by adopting new development models. This is the challenge we have set ourselves by 2050. We must all do our part and I am sure that we are on the right track. We realized that there is no Plan B for you or for the EU, it is a choice we have made for a long time and we are very proud of it "Sassoli said.
Sassoli defined young people as the future of the European continent and asked to strengthen democratic instruments to stop their temptation to leave the country. He also anticipated that a conference on the future of the EU would be held, and he would like Albania to be part of it.
