After Edi Rama's press conference on Tuesday - in which he announced that all betting centers will be closed by 1 in January 2019 - the modification of the law on gambling was also published.
The 71 article of this law specifies:
"The organizers of the 'sports bets' and 'track bets' categories will continue to operate until 31 December 2018. After that date, all licenses concerning the aforementioned categories will be canceled. "
The bill will go to parliament
The law will be voted in parliament. However, the government has the necessary majority to approve it, thus closing the doors to around 4.000 betting centers around the country.
After the press conference, yesterday the Albanian Prime Minister reiterated his position, invited all the TV, radio and newspapers to eliminate the advertisements concerning gambling games.
"Online betting centers and casinos will become illegal by December 31. Even advertising these categories will be illegal. For this reason, I invite all the media to eliminate advertising spontaneously. - wrote in a Rama tweet.
Bastet and kazinote elektronike do të dalin jashtë ligjit në 31 dhjetor. Ama çdo reklamim i tire në çdo lloj media, është i jashtëligjshëm. Portalet që kanë ende reklama të tilla t'i heqin vetë se ndërkohë po punohet për mbylljen and tire! Mos kemi llafe për lirinë and shtypit pastaj?

Although the bill has not yet been made public, official sources report that the draft provides for the total closure of the betting centers starting from the 1 January next year. It will be possible to bet exclusively online .
What will the consequences be?
Some important consequences will derive from this bill. First and foremost the government revenue, which thanks to taxes receives around 40 million euros a year from the sector.
Secondly, the unemployment that will be created. According to official data, in fact, in Albania there are about 4.500 betting centers; calculating a minimum of two employees per center, we obtain as a result that around 9.000 people will be unemployed starting from 1 January 2019.
However, the law proposed by the government has achieved great success among Albanian citizens: in a survey conducted by Top Channel, the 94% declared itself in favor of the law coming into force.
