The Albanian parliament today rejected with 78 votes the request made in July last year by the socialist majority of Prime Minister Edi Rama and concerning the removal from office of the President of the Republic Ilir Meta.
President Meta had been impeached by the majority for to have canceled June 10, 2019 the date of the administrative elections, however, held on June 30 as expected.
The issue had also intervened Venice Commission declaring that "the President of the Republic Ilir Meta has gone beyond his constitutional competences by canceling the administrative elections of 30 June 2019 and indicating others, but they are not acts of such gravity as to justify impeachment".
Rama: Meta deserves removal but we respect the opinion of the Venice Commission
Speaking in parliament today, Prime Minister Edi Rama said that President Meta deserves removal from office but that he will nevertheless refer to the opinion of the Venice Commission, given that it was the Socialist party that brought up the issue in question. advisory body of the Council of Europe.
"There is no change of course with Ilir Meta. We believe it should be removed from office, the violations are serious but since we entrusted ourselves to the Venice Commission, we will follow the opinion of this. " - said the Prime Minister.
Nonetheless, Rama stressed that the majority launched an initiative for an organic law on the establishment of the president:
“It is time for parliament to offer a clarification of formal and substantive competences with an organic law for the President, which includes provisions not to block electoral processes, to avoid scandalous precedents, and to simplify the appointment of members of the courts. It can no longer happen that the president refuses to decree ministers."- continued Rama.
