The parliament approved the law on the construction of the new national theater; the decree received 75 votes in favor and nobody opposed by the deputies present in the hall, who thus accepted Ilir Meta's presidential decree. This act paves the way for the demolition of the current building.
The entire main opposition party, the democratic party, boycotted the assembly, not appearing and reuniting in Vlore (Vlora) in protest. It was from Valona that the leader of the democratic party, Lulzim Basha, expressed himself on the question:
"The law is a threat to the national theater. Edi Rama and his thieves in parliament were caught in the act of theft through this accelerated law procedure. "
On the other hand, Prime Minister Edi Rama accused the opposition leader of having privatized the Metropol theater during his years as mayor of Tirana. Furthermore, during his speech to the assembly, he stated that the Democratic Party is making a hypocritical effort in defense of the national theater:
"Here they brought me a letter from Florjon Mima sent to Lulzim Basha when he was mayor of Tirana; the request was to privatize the Metropol theater, on behalf of the deputy Astrit Veliaj. They requested to privatize the theater to be able to build buildings with shops and bedrooms.
These scenes are an exclusive mark of the Democratic party and, with regard to them, that Basha and Mima have the last word; but speaking concretely we are faced with an example that represents their true face. That building cannot be called theater, let alone a cultural monument. We will make it become the most beautiful and the most modern of the Balkans. We will continue to move forward, overcoming all these barriers that come between us."- said the Albanian prime minister.
These words were followed by a reply from Basha, with a post on Twitter:
"The leader of the thieves is looking for letters of unimportant documentation. The Metropol theater is there! '17 Nentori', 'Republika', 'Partizani', 'Ali Demi' cinemas have been destroyed by Rama to build palaces. ”- replied the leader of the PD.
