With an unexpected move, the president of the Albanian Republic, Ilir Meta, canceled the decree he had signed concerning the date of the next local elections, initially planned for 30 June.
The head of state, in addition to not having announced a new date for the local elections, declared - in his press release published in the media - that the decision came as a consequence of the fact that none of the political parties committed itself to solving the political crisis which has characterized the country for months.
Furthermore, he stressed that in the current situation it is not possible to hold true, representative and inclusive elections, referring to the fact that the center-right opposition led by Lulzim Basha announced that he would boycott consultations, even threatening to hinder their progress .
The reactions of Edi Rama
From Berat, the reaction of the country's prime minister, Edi Rama, was not slow to arrive:
"The President was wrong, the elections will be held on June 30. I also expected this and it is nothing but the closure of the circle of a plan dictated by a reason, which does not concern the postponement of the elections but concerns the damage to the government and the burying of the reform of the judicial system.
We will hold the 30 June election. The elections are neither parties nor the president, but belong to the Albanian people. These are the behaviors of a desperate group and they will be forced to lose desperately.
[...] In 30 years the socialist party may have committed 1001 errors, there may have been failures, but it has great merit from day one: it has not negotiated with the national interest that wanted a reform of the judicial system in such a way that no one could escape justice. All equal before the law.
They are finite people who brought Albania into the streets feeding the mud to give Albania the reason for not being accepted in the European Union. They do not want Albania on the road to Europe because they know that the doors of the prisons will open for them. "- stated Rama.
The cancellation of the date of the administrative elections opens new scenarios and never explored in Albanian politics.
