Last week, during the meeting of the Albanian Council of Ministers, another step forward was made for the recognition of the new Albanian licenses in Italy.
The government of the Land of Eagles, in fact, has approved the illustrative draft relating to the new licenses by transmitting to the competent Albanian ministry the task of interacting with the Italian government to obtain the recognition of new licenses.
Once this process has been completed, the Italian government will transmit the recognition of the licenses to the offices of the civil motorization. To date, however, there is still no estimated date.
The problem of new licenses
Although Albania has signed agreements with several countries (including Italy) for the mutual recognition of driving licenses, the new Albanian format of the latter (introduced in 2017) has not been most recognized by the Italian state.
The reason is simple: the Italian Ministry of Transport has not been advised of this change and, above all, of revising the agreement. The Albanian government for this task had relied on the embassies, which informed the foreign ministry.
However, for reasons still unknown, this information has never been received by the competent bodies and, consequently, the Italian motorization has found itself having to rightly refuse the conversions of Albanian licenses in the new format.
The problem obviously did not concern the Albanian licenses in the old format, issued in the Country of the Eagles from 1 July 2015 to 2016, and for which the two countries have an agreement that expires the next 31 December.
Under this agreement, the Albanian citizen in possession of a regular driving license, can drive in Italy within 1 year from the date in which he declares his residence in Italy. Once this date has expired, he can no longer drive, otherwise the license will be withdrawn.
In any case, the license holder, even if he cannot drive, still has other 3 years to request the conversion of the driving license. Once this deadline has passed, to obtain the driving license must follow the regular examination path.
