The American Embassy in Tirana has published on Facebook an illustrative video on the establishment in Albania of the new special anti-corruption prosecution (SPAK), which will have the task of investigating and prosecuting corruption, organized crime, as well as crimes committed by senior state officials.
The United States will send 35 officials (including prosecutors and investigators) to Albania who will help SPAK in its training process against organized crime, corruption, money laundering etc. Meanwhile, legal advisers to the US embassy are offering assistance to Albanian prosecutors for existing cases.
The SPAK should be operational on December 19, the day on which members of the special anti-corruption prosecution will swear an oath to the President of the Republic of Albania, Ilir Meta.
"The United States is focused on helping Albania create an integrated justice system. All Albanian citizens are protagonists when they ask that the reform of the judicial system lead to a transparent system and that it gives an account to the population.
The days of the past when corrupt officials and criminal leaders were untouchable are about to end. Selective justice will be replaced by justice for all. A new anti-corruption structure is being established with the support of the United States and will have on its target all the individuals who have managed to avoid criminal investigations thanks to personal relationships. SPAK will soon be operational and will aim at bribing senior state officials.
The United States is committed to ensuring that SPAK is established and functions independently. With their support from 2 million dollars, the United States is building the foundation of SPAK. The legal advisers of the US embassy are working with the Albanian justice institutions and international partners to develop the bases of SPAK, and will offer assistance for criminal investigations.
The new justice system guarantees more efficient criminal investigations and an end to impunity for corrupt corrupt state officials and organized crime. This year we are working through the New Jersey / Albania partnership program to identify 35 prosecutors and investigators from the United States to form on the new criminal legislation in Albania. Since the beginning of the 2020, US prosecutors will offer training to SPAK on issues such as the fight against corruption, organized crime and money laundering. ”- reads the US embassy video.
