The mayor of Durrës, Valbona Sako, resigned in the morning following the controversy derived from her statements on the evening of Saturday 30 November.
Interviewed by the TV station "Top Channel", in fact, Sako expressed herself badly, declaring to be happy with the 50 victims of the earthquake. The mayor of Durrës was obviously referring to the fact that, given the magnitude of the earthquake, the number of victims could be far greater. These are his indicted statements:
"It was a devastating earthquake but we are happy with the 50 victims because in other cases there were more than a thousand victims."- said Sako to Top Channel.
Her words have raised controversy and accusations throughout the country, leading the same mayor to resign today 1 December. The accusations of incapacity to face the post-earthquake situation weigh against her:
"Wounded by the great and negative reaction compared to a comment released in a situation of stress that goes beyond my strength, I resigned from my post.”- Valbona Sako published on her Facebook profile.
