From today, 12 March, urban transport has been suspended in the cities of Tirana and Durres. From tomorrow at 6.00 until Sunday midnight, the ban will extend to private vehicles in Tirana, Durres, Shkoder, Lezha, Elbasan, Lushnje, Fier and Vlora.
The municipality of Gjirokastër also decided autonomously to suspend the urban transport service in the city
These drastic but necessary measures were taken today by the government to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the country, after confirming 23 cases of infection today. The only vehicles that can circulate will be ambulances, vehicles that perform state service functions and those that carry goods.
It was Prime Minister Rama who announced the new measures taken by the government, apologizing to the Albanians for the restrictive measures.
The statements of Rama
“I apologize 1000 times but this battle cannot be won otherwise. From Friday at 06.00 until midnight on Sunday it will be forbidden to circulate private vehicles and the long distance lines Tirana and Durres and other cities in the country
From 06:00 tomorrow until Sunday midnight, private vehicle traffic in Tirana will be banned, as will long-distance transport between Tirana and Durres. Traffic from private and urban vehicles to Shkoder, Lezha, Elbasan, Lushnje, Fier and Vlora will be suspended from Friday at 06.00 until midnight on Sunday.
Traffic in these territories will be open only to ambulances, to vehicles that perform public service functions and to the transport of goods. These extreme measures that limit freedom of movement are a necessity to protect every citizen, every family and Albania itself from the aggressive escalation of the coronavirus attack on us and our loved ones.
This is an "influence" that will affect many of us! 80% of those affected will pass it by without noticing. This means that each of us can have it, even if we do not have any symptoms, but it is up to all of us to protect the elderly and the sick around us, because if we pass it on to them it means we will give big "presents". "
Edi Rama turned to all companies that supply food or medicine to Tirana and Durres to accredit the transport vehicles of their employees.
Employees at Tirana airport or other state institutions will also need to be accredited with the state police directorate to be able to drive on the roads.
